2012-2013 Student Dress Code

The Board of School Trustees approved changes to the student dress code at its regular meeting on July 21. The complete dress code regulations are detailed in the Student and Parent Handbook available on the Mathis ISD website, www.mathisisd.org

1. Mesh or clear backpacks are no longer required. Backpacks or accessories that advertise or have symbols representing drugs, alcohol, concert bands, tobacco, sex, nudity, crime violence, gangs, profanity, skulls, racial slurs, or altered religious symbols will not be allowed. The campus principal will determine the appropriateness of the backpack in question.

2. Large purses are not allowed. Female students may carry a small purse for personal items no larger than 8 inches by 5 inches.

3. Any buttoned up shirt tucked in with a belt (No see through or sheer fabric) Principal will determine appropriateness of shirt type and style.

4. Any solid color polo shirts with stripes and/or diagonal designs may be worn

All other dress code requirements remain in effect for the 2015-2016 school year.

Dress and Grooming

The district’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:

- The Board of Trustees have mandated that students in grades Pk-12 abide by the Student Dress Code. Standards for dress and personal grooming for all students shall be in effect during school hours and at all school sponsored activities, including graduation ceremonies.

- The Superintendent or designee shall have authority to alter the dress code as deemed necessary to respond to an orderly environment conducive to learning.

- The District prohibits any clothing or grooming that in the principal’s judgment may cause disruption or interference with normal school operations.

If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student may be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day, until the problem is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.

Mathis ISD General Standards for Dress and Grooming

Mathis ISD male and female students must adhere to the following dress and grooming standards. The following General Standards for Dress and Grooming outlined in this handbook shall carry the weight of policy:

- Clothes, accessories or patches advertising alcoholic beverages, tobacco, drugs suggestive language or scenes, violence, death occultism, blood, gore, anti-social behavior, or promoting gang identification are prohibited from being worn during school or at school related activities. Logo no larger than 3x5 inches.

- Jackets or sweaters are allowed. Jackets may be one size larger than their actual size. Jackets with hoods are allowed with understanding not to wear the jackets hood within Mathis High School Facilities or any other building within Mathis ISD.

- Caps, bandanas, hats or any item covering any part of the head or face will not be worn on campus during school hours

- Belts should be appropriately sized waist. Belts must be appropriate for school and have a standard buckle (not oversized or embellished). Belts will not have metal attachments, rivets, or ornaments

- Visible tattoos must be covered during school or any after school function.

- Shoes must be worn at all times. Shower shoes, rubber flip-flops of any type or thickness are not allowed. Sandals are allowed but must have a manufactured back strap. Steel toed boots or shoes are prohibited.

- Shorts may be worn, but must be hemmed and be no shorter than 3-inches above the knee.

- Athletic shorts, warm-ups, wind suits, and sweat pants are not allowed except for wear in athletic and PE classes.

- Backpacks or accessories that advertise or represent drugs, alcohol, concert bands, tobacco, sex, nudity, crime, violence, gangs, profanity, altered religious symbols, skulls or racial slurs will not be allowed.(Campus Principal has final authority on determination of backpack appropriateness)

Shirts

- All shirts shall have sleeves and be button up with the exception of the top button.

- All shirts will remain tucked in whether sitting or standing; no midriff may be showing.

- Any color buttoned up shirt tucked in with a belt (No see through or sheer fabric) Principal will determine appropriateness of shirt type and style.

- Any solid color polo shirts or polo shirts with stripes and/or diagonal designs may be worn.

- Mathis Pirate spirit shirts may be worn.

- Undershirts any color may be worn under polo shirts. Polo shirts and spirit shirts must remain tucked in at all times. Polo shirts and spirit shirts will be worn at actual size.

Mathis Alternative Learning Center (DAEP):

- Students in attendance will wear a white or grey t-shirt

Pants

- Blue/black jeans or navy blue/khaki uniform pants/shorts/skirts/capris will be worn. Shorts and skirts will not be shorter than 3 inches above the knee.

- Pants, shorts, and capris will not have side pockets or side loops.

The following items are not permitted; Disciplinary action will be taken for those not complying with the dress code.

- Cargo, painter, or carpenter pants

- Pants with excessively long or large pockets

- Pants with side pockets or side loops

- Low Rise pants

- Excessively tight clothing, skinny jeans or jeggings

- Warm-ups, sweat pants, or wind suits

- Oversized or baggy clothing

- Torn or frayed attire

- Baggy jeans/shorts/slacks, cargo pants, painter pants and gang-type pants are prohibited at school and at any school function. Pants must be properly fitted in the waist and crouch areas. The bottom must be hemmed and must be no wider than 10 inches.

- Pants must be worn above hip bones.

Personal Grooming

- Males shall be clean shaven. No mustaches or beards are being allowed. Males shall not be allowed to wear long hair that covers the entire ear and hair will not touch down to the collar. Sideburns shall not be longer than the middle of the earlobe.

- Males will not wear hair in ponytail or bun style.

- Males shall not be allowed to wear long hair that covers the entire ear and hair may not EXTEND PAST THE BOTTOM OF THE COLLAR.

- Earrings shall be worn on the ears only; no other display of body piercing shall be allowed. Males will not wear earrings. Girls may wear no more than two earrings per ear. Long dangling or large hoop earrings are not permitted.

- Males and females will not wear Band-Aids to cover unauthorized body piercing items except in body areas that clothing apparel will not be appropriate to cover the area such as ear lopes, hands, etc.

- Excessively thick chains or necklaces may not be worn by any student.

- No partial eyebrow or head shaving that creates patches of hair or designs are allowed.

- No highlights or dyed hair, nor any alterations from natural hair color are allowed.

- Hair must be neat, clean and well-groomed at all times. Distracting hairstyles such as extremely dyed hair, painted hair, spikes, tails, mohawks, or dreadlocks are not allowed.

- Hair shall not cover the forehead past the eyebrows.

- Partial head shaving or partial eyebrow shaving, which create patches of hair or designs, are not allowed.

- Medallions, beads, religious symbols, or chokers may be worn inside the shirt.

- The use of colognes, sprays, gels, etc. is not allowed in the classrooms.

- Teeth Grills will not be worn.

- Large purses are not allowed. A female student may carry a small purse for personal items no larger than 8 inches by 5 inches.

Violations of Dress Code

If the principal determines that a student violates the dress code policy, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student will be assigned to attend an after- school detention and/or in-school suspension for the remainder of the day or until the problem is corrected. Subsequent dress code offenses will result in more serious disciplinary action. Appropriate discipline procedures shall be followed in all cases in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. Parents will be contacted regarding violations and corrections needed Questions or concerns regarding dress code may be addressed to the campus administration. All decisions regarding dress code will be made by the campus principal based on the health and safety of students.
