Richard Varela, Jr.

 

RIchard "Rick" Varela is currently the High School Band Director for Mathis ISD. Mr. Varela is the arranger, visual designer, and percussion specialist for the Mighty Mathis Pirate Band. Along with the Cabreras, Rick team teaches at both Mathis Middle School and Mathis High School campuses. Rick is currently in his 5th year of teaching, all of which have been with the Pirate Band. Mr. Varela is an active performer with various recording artists. Rick is currently in his 3rd year as a staff member for Drum Corps International's Open Class Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps of Edinburg, TX.
Rick received his Bachelor of Music with teacher certification from Texas A&M University-Kingsville (formerly A&I) in 2008. While studying, RIck was a member of the Jazz program under the direction of Dr. Paul Hageman and Mr. James Warth. There he played with such acts as Paquito D' Rivera, Ed Shaughnessy, Wayne Bergeron, Bob Mintzer, Claudio Roditi, Maynard Ferguson, and Bobby Shew. Mr. Varela studied percussion with Mr. Randy Fluman and Ron Schermerhorn. While a student of TAMUK, Rick was fortunate to perform at TMEA Music Convention with the Jazz Band I, WInd Symphony, and Percussion Ensemble in 2003,2006, and 2008 respectfully. He was a member of Kingsville Symphony Orchestra and Victoria Swing Band under the direction of Mr. Fred Junkin.
Rick currently resides in Mathis, TX with his wife, Alexis, their two beautiful children, Emery and Julian, and their four legged chihuahua "children", Bailey and Bruiser.

Miguel R. Cabrera

 

Miguel R. Cabrera is a native of Robstown, Texas and is a 2000 Graduate of Robstown High School where he was a two-time 5A All State French Horn Player and a recipient of the U.I.L. Texas State Solo and Ensemble “Outstanding Performer” Award. He studied piano under pianist Nina Drath who is well known as a Fredrick Chopin Scholar and performer of his music. Mr. Cabrera earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Studies (Education) from the University of Texas at Austin in 2005 where he studied horn with the late Wayne Barrington and current Horn Professor Patrick Hughes. He was a member of the world renowned Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Longhorn Band and Mariachi. As a member of the UT Wind Ensemble, he performed in Carnegie Hall in New York City in February of 2005.  He also marched with the Longhorn Band at President George W. Bush’s Inaugural Parades in 2001 and 2005 and in the Rose Bowl Parade on January 1, 2005 along with performing in the Rose Bowl game later that evening. After teaching in Laredo and United ISD, Mr. Cabrera was admitted back to UT to pursue a Master’s Degree in Music in French Horn Performance which he completed in 2010. Mr. Cabrera is in his seventh year of teaching and is currently the Band Director at Mathis Middle School and the Mariachi Director for “Mariachi Mathis.” This past year, the Mathis Middle School Band was awarded the U.I.L. Sweepstakes Award. In February 2013, Mariachi Mathis was crowned the 2A State Mariachi Champion in MASBA Texas State Mariachi Competition. Mr. Cabrera was also a director for the 2011 2A Champion Hebbronville High School Mariachi.

In his spare time Mr. Cabrera enjoys performing regularly with the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra, Corpus Christi Wind Symphony and around the Corpus Christi area with his brass quintet "Holiday Brass." He is also the pianist for St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Robstown; a post he has held since 1995. His brother, Carlos, is also a band director in Cy Fair ISD in Houston. Lastly, he is blessed to work with his father, Charles Cabrera, Jr. the Mathis ISD Band Director.
