Intermediate School Bus Traffic Alert for the 500 Block of E. San Patricio Avenue (Business Highway 359)
Mathis Intermediate School students exit and board buses parked in front the school, 550 E. San Patricio Avenue, during the morning and afternoon bus drop off and pick up.
Students are dropped off Monday thru Friday from 7:20 a.m. to 8 a.m., from 3:50 p.m. to 4:25 p.m. for regular routes in the afternoon, and tutorial students from 5:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.
Last week Mathis ISD administrators were notified by the Department of Public Safety that the buses parked on Business State Highway 359 requires the Texas Transportation Code chapter 547 regulations be enforced. Chapter 547 requires all bus drivers stopped on a highway to allow students to board or exit the bus must activate all the flashing warning signal lights and other equipment that warns other drivers that the bus has stopped to load or unload children, and then activate the red lights and the extended STOP sign on the bus drivers side which vehicle drivers can see. The vehicles are required to stop and not pass the bus flashing its red lights and the stop sign.
Drivers are used to stopping when they see the red lights and bus stop signs when they encounter stopped buses on FM 666 or on county roads. Drivers now must also look for the red lights and STOP signs when the buses are parked in the 500 block of East San Patricio Avenue during students exit and loading periods.
Mathis ISD will explore other traffic solutions for the 500 block that will not slow traffic.
