Mathis ISD Takes Action to Manage Revenue Decline

3/31/2009

The Mathis Independent School District has unfortunately made a determination that a necessary reduction in force is to be implemented for the 2009-2010 school year. The reason for the reduction in force is a financial exigency due the loss of student enrollment for the school year 2008-2009.

For the past three years, Mathis ISD has experienced a decline of student enrollment. Mathis ISD state revenues are directly linked to the average daily attendance. The decline of student enrollment results in a loss of state revenue ranging from $360,000 to up to $500,000. Dr. Maria Rodriguez-Casas, Superintendent of Schools, recommended the closing of the Mathis ISD Choices for Accelerated Learning Academy (Alternative Education Program), program changes, and elimination of staff positions.

On March 30, 2009, our Board of School Trustees made the heart wrenching decision to approve the termination of staff contracts affecting

  • Administrator Positions: 2

  • Teaching Positions: 14 Teaching Positions

  • Instructional Support: 1

It is unfortunate that the District has had to take these necessary steps and implement the reduction in force. Mathis ISD contracted with the Texas Association of School Boards for a staffing review study which validates the recommendations presented at the board meeting.

Dr. Maria Rodriguez-Casas stated that this has been the hardest decision, she has ever made during her entire career as she understands that it has an impact not only on the district employees but also on our entire community that is facing difficult and challenging times due to our nation’s economy.
