Rick Schmitt and Chester Stork (under the bus engine) of Freightliner retrofit a bus for emissions filters. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality awarded Mathis ISD a “Clean Bus” grant of $29,000 to retrofit five buses with emission control filters to reduce air pollution from diesel fumes. The retrofit was completed April 7 by the C.C. Freightliner service personnel. The district’s five new buses had the latest in emissions controls equipment installed when delivered. The five older buses will be retrofitted in May at TAMU-CC. The university and Valero are retrofitting emissions controls on 200 older buses for Coastal Bend school districts.
