Mathis ISD preliminary 2009 TAKS results improved for the four campuses. The final TAKS scores will not be available until August when all the data submitted by PEIMS and demographics are integrated for the district’s accountability performance. District students—and their parents—could celebrate the “commended” status earned by a greater number of students in 2009. Mathis High School 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students raised the passing percentages in reading/English Language Arts, math, and social studies. The science scores for the 11th Grade were raised to 77 percent; the 10th grade pass percentage was 36 percent, a low number for TAKS test in science. McCraw Junior High School students celebrated with a high number of commended performance scores. The 8th grade had 50 students with a commended rating out of the 105 students taking the TAKS social studies test. The overall 8th grade social studies score was 90 percent passing. The 8th graders had 49 with a commended rating out of 117 students in math, with an overall pass percentage of 97 percent for the grade. The 8th grade students performed above last year’s pass levels for reading, math, social studies, and science. Seventh grade students surpassed the state average TAKS score of 93 in writing, with a 95 percent passing score. Twenty-one 7th graders had commended scores in reading, and 24 students earned commended scores in writing. Intermediate School’s 6th grade TAKS passing scores in reading and math were 94 percent and 74 percent, respectively. Forty-five 6th graders were ranked as commended in reading, and 28 earned a commended rating in math. Thirty-five 5th grade students achieved a commended score of the 74 who passed the test. The 4th graders scored higher in math and writing, with reading scores down slightly. Weber-Hardin Elementary third grade students also celebrated a record number of commended passing scores; 37 students earned commended scores in reading, and 32 students in math. Principal Adell Cueva reported that third graders’ passed at an average scale score of 2250; 2100 is the minimum passing scale score.
