Mathis I.S.D. students, teachers, administrators, and Board of School Trustee members and guests celebrated the groundbreaking for the new middle school at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 17. By 11 a.m. Journeyman Construction earth-moving equipment and trucks were at work on site preparation for the new building. By Monday, September 21 the student parking lot hard surface had disappeared under layers of churned dirt. Dr. Maria Rodriguez-Casas said the school should be ready in time for the 2010-2011 school year. The school will have 330 students sixth through eighth grade students. Vitteta, a U.S. based architecture firm with an office in San Antonio is the architect, and Journeyman Construction of Corpus Christi is the contractor. Dr. Rodriguez-Casas said “I think it’s a dream come true. Our students will fill these classrooms with their smiles and their energy.”
